How to compare OSRS equipment upgrades
Understand the difference between equipment bonuses and damage estimates, and make more useful gear comparisons.
Equipment bonuses describe a setup
The equipment totals are a useful way to compare what you are wearing. They are not a prediction of how quickly you will finish a particular encounter. A damage estimate also needs a target and combat assumptions; changing those inputs can change the ranking of two setups.
Keep the target, player levels and combat style consistent when comparing alternatives. Otherwise a better-looking result may reflect a different assumption instead of a better purchase.
One big hit is not the whole comparison
Weapons have different attack speeds. The OSRS Wiki documents these speeds in game ticks; a higher maximum hit alone therefore cannot tell you which weapon deals more damage over time. Compare a complete weapon setup, including its compatible ammunition or off-hand, rather than inspecting one bonus in isolation.
Be especially careful when a two-handed weapon replaces both your weapon and shield. The resulting change involves two slots. Recheck the complete set’s cost and bonuses after making the switch.
Make one controlled change
Begin with the setup you are considering. Keep the same levels and budget, change one purchase or filter, then compare the resulting equipment. If several slots change, record the full combination rather than attributing the entire result to one item.
There is no universal order in which everyone should buy boots, jewellery, armour and weapons. An upgrade’s value depends on the equipment and account that surround it. Treat a general progression list as a source of candidates to check, not a substitute for comparing your own options.
Read the limits before trusting the ranking
OSRSBest is a planning aid. Its equipment catalogue and simplified optimization cannot capture every encounter, conditional item effect or unlock. Inspect the methodology and the relevant Wiki strategy page before committing to a costly change.
Use the share link to ask a focused question: include your activity, available budget and important unlocks alongside the setup. Another player can give much more useful feedback with that context than with an unexplained best-in-slot label.
