Barrows gear: Magic setup, Ahrim switch and prayer drain
Plan a Barrows equipment set around air spells or a powered staff, understand the Ahrim switch, and account for prayer drain.
The starting point
Build around your Magic attack first. Air spells exploit the brothers’ elemental weakness, while a trident offers a powered-staff alternative. A Ranged switch is useful for Ahrim; check Ghommal’s hilt 2 if prayer drain is limiting your trips.
Decide which Magic attack you will actually use
The Barrows strategy page documents an air weakness for the brothers. Wind spells and a powered staff are therefore different comparisons: a trident’s built-in attack should not be treated as an air spell.
Trident of the seas or swamp is a powered-staff candidate. For a spellcasting route, check an appropriate autocast staff and the Wind spell your level supports. The Wiki lists options including a smoke battlestaff. Confirm spellbook, runes and autocast compatibility rather than buying a staff solely for its displayed Magic bonus.
Keep the Ahrim switch deliberate
Ahrim is weakest to Ranged. Magic remains an option, particularly with air spells, but a small Ranged switch gives you another way to handle him. Choose whether the extra equipment is worth the inventory space for your account.
Before adding more switches, do a bank rehearsal: equip your main set, switch, and check the resulting weapon and ammunition. Write down which pieces remain shared. A saved Magic setup by itself is not a complete Barrows inventory.
Budget for repeat trips, not just one chest
Ghommal’s hilt 2 is listed as an off-hand option to remove Barrows prayer drain. Check its Combat Achievement unlock before treating it as an available piece of gear.
Log your own supply use over a few runs. If reaching or resetting the activity is your main delay, evaluate your travel plan before spending on marginal equipment changes. Do not use a hypothetical profit-per-hour figure to justify a purchase you cannot comfortably fund.

Before you leave the bank
- Bring a spade to enter the crypts.
- Set the intended spell or check powered-staff charges.
- Verify the Ranged switch and ammunition if bringing one.
- Check whether Ghommal’s hilt 2 is unlocked.
- Bring prayer restoration, food and your return route.
Common questions
Is the highest Magic attack bonus always the best Barrows upgrade?
No. Your spell, its elemental interaction, damage bonuses, supplies and switches matter too. Compare the actual attack you intend to use, not just the equipment total.
