How to plan an OSRS gear upgrade on a budget

Build a practical gear budget, compare complete equipment sets, and avoid spending your supply money on one upgrade.

Start with a usable spending limit

Your bank value is not your equipment budget. Set aside the money you need for supplies, ammunition, charges and travel before choosing a spending limit. The calculator estimates equipment acquisition costs; those ongoing expenses need their own allowance.

For example, if you choose a 5M equipment limit, treat that as the amount available for the entire setup. It is not a claim that every recommended item can be bought immediately at its displayed price. Check offers in the Grand Exchange before selling equipment you already use.

Enter the account you have today

Use your actual combat levels, then review quest, diary and other unlock requirements for any unfamiliar item. A level requirement alone does not prove you can obtain or equip something. Exclude categories that do not fit your account before comparing results.

An untradeable reward is not automatically a free upgrade: earning it may require time, supplies and prerequisite quests. Keep a separate list of rewards you want to work toward so they do not obscure what you can buy now.

Compare whole setups, then individual purchases

Run the same combat style at two budgets, keeping your levels and filters fixed. Look at which slots actually change. This gives you a shortlist of purchases to investigate rather than a shopping list based only on an item’s reputation.

If you want to keep an item, select and lock it before recalculating. The budget still describes the complete setup’s estimated value, including locked equipment; it is not a bank-aware estimate of additional spending. Subtract what you already own when making your personal shopping list.

Check the activity before you buy

A general equipment recommendation does not model every boss mechanic, Slayer task, special attack or set effect. Confirm the weapon, ammunition and defensive needs against the activity’s strategy guide. A small theoretical improvement may be less useful than comfortable switches or enough supplies to finish the trip.

Save or share your candidate setup before changing the budget. Review the equipment requirements and current prices again when you return: a saved estimate is a comparison point, not a price guarantee.
