Zulrah gear setups: Magic, Ranged switches & inventories

Compare three paired Zulrah loadouts with visual Magic-to-Ranged switches, complete inventories, level checks and exact setup links.

The starting point

Start with a Magic attack you can sustain and a manageable Ranged switch. Compare a fire-spell route with a powered staff such as trident of the seas, then check the actual phase mechanics rather than treating general equipment bonuses as a Zulrah damage simulation.

Choose a complete starting setup

Pick a setup for your experience and unlocks, then check the equipment and supplies together. These are curated examples, not calculated maximum-DPS rankings. Prices change; the planner allowance is not a quoted shopping bill.

Check your levels

Enter the levels you want to check. Equipment requirements and recommended combat levels are different; quest and item unlocks still need checking below.

First completion: four-item Ranged switch

A charged trident and a simple crossbow switch, keeping the cape, jewellery and off-hand unchanged while learning rotations.

Numbers match the packing list. Each square uses one inventory slot; stacked quantities share a square.

Blue form: Ranged setup · 4 items to equip

Keep the other slots equipped. These replacement items are included in the inventory above.

  • Swap weapon, body and legs, then equip the runite bolts with the crossbow. Return all four switch items to the inventory when restoring Magic. The crossbow and trident both allow the book to stay equipped.
  • The Magic cape stays on to avoid another gear change; bolts are not recovered by Ava’s device in this example.

Packing list & supply notes
  1. 1 × Rune crossbow · 1 slot

Ranged switch: restore the matching Magic item before attacking the green or red form.

  2. 1 × Black d'hide body · 1 slot

Ranged switch: restore the matching Magic item before attacking the green or red form.

  3. 1 × Black d'hide chaps · 1 slot

Ranged switch: restore the matching Magic item before attacking the green or red form.

  4. 500 × Runite bolts · 1 slot

One ammunition stack. Equip with the crossbow; return all switch items to the inventory when restoring Magic.

  5. 2 × Ring of recoil · 2 slots

Two spare rings. Check the equipped ring before entry and replace it when it shatters; previously used rings do not promise a fresh 40 damage of recoil.

  6. 1 × Anti-venom+(4) · 1 slot

Maintain venom immunity. Ordinary antipoison is not an equivalent protection plan.

  7. 1 × Ranging potion(4) · 1 slot
  8. 2 × Prayer potion(4) · 2 slots

Adjust after measuring your own prayer use; these examples assume one kill then a bank/reset.

  9. 1 × Zul-andra teleport · 1 slot

Arrival scroll. Complete Regicide; this avoids assuming 76 Agility for the fairy-ring route.

  10. 1 × Teleport to house · 1 slot

Emergency one-click exit. Own a house and test the tablet before the fight; no restoration pool is assumed.

  11. 10 × Shark · 10 slots
  12. 4 × Cooked karambwan · 4 slots

Combination food. Two bank inventory slots are deliberately left free, including room for the shield when equipping the two-handed blowpipe.

Substitutions & upgrade order

If you are missing an item

  • Ahrim’s robes → Mystic robe top and bottom

A lower-cost fallback when repairs or purchase cost are impractical; this does not remove the trident or other equipment requirements.

  • Blowpipe switch → Rune crossbow and rune bolts

Use the first-completion set as a complete alternative. Include its ammunition and book; changing only the weapon leaves the ranged loadout incomplete.

  • Ring of recoil → Charged ring of suffering with recoil enabled

A later convenience purchase that reduces manual ring replacement. Charge it with recoils, check its toggle and requirements; the uncharged version does not replace recoil protection.

What to improve next

  1. First make prayer changes, safe positioning and the existing gear switch reliable. More switches can reduce practical damage if they delay attacks or movement.
  2. Keep both weapons supplied and improve relevant Magic/Ranged levels before assuming expensive armour is the best next purchase.
  3. Consider a charged ring of suffering for convenience, then test extra cape/necklace switches only when the smaller switch is comfortable.

Zulrah in its green serpentine form
Zulrah has multiple forms. This is the green serpentine form; your equipment plan must also account for switches and venom protection.Game image © Jagex Limited · Source: OSRS Wiki

Plan for the fight, not a fixed price tier

Zulrah changes forms throughout the encounter. The OSRS Wiki describes different resistances across those forms, so Magic and Ranged switches are a useful starting point for preparation. Beginners can reduce the number of switches while learning the mechanics.

This page is a preparation checklist, not a rotation walkthrough or a promise of kills per hour. Use the Wiki’s current strategy and rotation information alongside it. OSRSBest does not simulate the sequence of Zulrah phases or the time spent moving and switching.

Compare actual weapon and spell candidates

Trident of the seas is a powered-staff candidate in the Wiki’s Zulrah equipment recommendations, and the toxic blowpipe is a Ranged candidate. Check their requirements and running costs before using them as your starting pair.

Zulrah has a documented fire-spell weakness. That creates a separate route to compare with a powered staff: choose the fire spell your level supports, confirm an appropriate casting weapon and pack its runes. Do not assume a generic Magic score evaluates this elemental interaction.

Evaluate one complete route at a time. If changing the weapon also changes spellbook, armour or the number of inventory switches, record those differences before judging whether the purchase improves your learning setup.

Build two complementary equipment lists

Write down your Magic weapon or spell choice and your Ranged weapon first. Check each weapon’s requirements, compatible ammunition or runes, and charging needs. Then decide which armour slots you can comfortably switch without losing track of movement and prayers.

Use separate calculator runs to explore each style. The two results are independent full setups: do not add their quoted budgets and assume that is the cost of a practical hybrid inventory. Identify shared items, remove duplicate purchases, and leave room for supplies.

Prepare supplies and an exit

The Wiki’s preparation guidance includes venom protection, food, prayer restoration and a way to travel back. Check the current recommendations for your account and bring an emergency teleport you can use. Equipment cost alone is not the cost of learning the boss.

Before leaving the bank, check charges, ammunition and the actual number of free inventory slots after adding your switches. Save your equipment list so you can change one part at a time between attempts instead of rebuilding from memory.

Choose upgrades after identifying the problem

If you are struggling to manage switches, simplify your inventory before increasing its cost. If supplies run out, review the encounter guide and your movement before assuming another armour purchase will solve the problem.

When comparing a new weapon or spell, use a damage calculator that supports Zulrah’s forms and that specific effect. A general equipment score is not enough to establish the best Zulrah purchase. Check current item prices and requirements immediately before buying.

Before you leave the bank

  • Choose a spell or check powered-staff charges.
  • Pack the Ranged switch and compatible ammunition.
  • Prepare venom protection, food and an emergency teleport.
  • Review rotations and decide which switches you can manage.

Common questions

Does a trident exploit Zulrah’s fire weakness?

A trident’s built-in spell is not a fire spell. Compare that route separately from casting fire spells, including the equipment, runes and spellbook each requires.
